The sound of breathing synced with the heartbeat of
the exhausted woman; still, she kept running. In the dank stairwell, where the
smell of dust and a terrible past clung to the air with lethal intent, the
walls made a pattern of roses lining them from top to bottom almost in a
pinstripe fashion. The woman couldn’t help but notice that as she ran down the
flights of stairs, she wouldn’t be able to differentiate between those tiny
rose buds or splattered blood on the wall. The thought of it terrified her,
especially after what she had seen in the bathroom of her room.
Something like that could never be forgotten; a
massive figure hunched over half a torso with dead skin decorating their lips
as it chewed with gusto. She needed to get out of there and find help. She had
been staying at an abandoned apartment complex ever since her company let her
go and decided the jobs were better suited elsewhere in the world. With no one
hiring and her bills never ending, she was forced to seek shelter where she
could. It seemed like a perfectly good spot to live due to the circumstances.
But it seemed that no where she went could guarantee
safety. And in this moment in time, as a startled and mortified woman ran down
several flights of stairs in an abandoned apartment complex with rose decorated
walls, her sanity was no guarantee either.
